Rehabilitation Program after a Mastectomy

E-mail Print PDF

Undergoing a mastectomy, or removing one or both breasts, is a big challenge for women. It is a painful process not only physically, as well as psychologically. A patient may feel withdrawn and think that she’s not complete anymore. However, with proper rehabilitation and support of family members and friends, these problems can be overcome.

Proper rehabilitation is what a patient who has undergone a mastectomy needs. The kind of rehabilitation she’ll receive will contribute to the quality of life she’ll have after the operation. Normally, the rehabilitation starts on the second day after operation. Physical exercises are done to reduce the muscle strength of the upper limb on the operated side, limit shoulder joint motion on the operated side, and avoid lymph circulation disorder.

Upper limb exercises are important to restore the full shoulder joint range and improve muscle strength. Without this exercise, tightening of the hand will happen which will limit the hand motion. Exercising 2 times a day is recommended, as long as the hand is not over-exhausted.  Aside from exercises, it is also essential to put one’s limb high so that any edema can flow in accordance with the law of gravity. It can be done by putting the hands on a rolled blanket, hard pillows or a special chock, where the limb can rest above the shoulder joint.

The patient can do some work using her hand on the operated side as long as the weight does not exceed 2 kilograms. She should also do a self-massage. Usually, proper massage is taught to the patient by her specialist after the surgery.

Another part of mastectomy rehabilitation is wearing a prosthesis. This is not only for beautification purposes, but also to avoid health problems. After a mastectomy, there is the possibility that the woman will suffer from posture problems, especially if a bigger breast is removed. In order to avoid this, the loss of breast is replaced by cotton wool or a sponge in the first phase of healing. When it is completely healed, a regular prosthesis can be worn which should be the same weight and size as that of the remaining breast.

If given proper rehabilitation, a woman can recover from a mastectomy fast, and can live life normally again. With the support of her family and friends, plus the quality of rehabilitation she’ll get will determine how she’ll cope with the loss of her breast.

Disabled persons have this idea that they will remain unemployed throughout their lives. Well, we can’t blame them. Having a disability sometimes leads you to be pessimistic in life. But with just the right attitude, persons with disabilities can lead a life as normal and as productive as possible. A disability should not be a hindrance in making a living.

This is where vocational rehabilitation comes in. It is a program which focuses on helping people with certain health conditions and disabilities find employment. These individuals are being taught job skills, and are made to prepare career plans. The program aims to assist these people in getting a job and keeping it, not only to acquire a salary, but medical insurance as well.

Vocational rehabilitation is helping students as young as 14 years old to map out their career and future. It helps those with disabilities in several ways. It doesn’t ask for your résumé when getting a job for you. It also matches the applicants with the employers’ required qualifications to obtain a good job match. It even has workplace consultations by visiting the worksite and giving out suggestions to create opportunities for their qualified applicants. Vocational rehabilitation provides training at the worksite, or offsite, as needed to ensure that the job works well for both parties - the applicants and employers alike.

The most vital service of vocational rehabilitation is providing counseling and guidance to all its members. The counselors assist these individuals in discovering their strengths, polishing their innate skills, and working on their weaknesses. They also help these individuals with disabilities plan out their career goals, along with ways to achieving them. The support given by the vocational rehabilitation extends as far as when the person has acquired employment and has proven his capacity in doing the job well.

Vocational rehabilitation helps those with disabilities to have a positive outlook on life again. By providing them with jobs, it helps them build their self-esteem and confidence. It helps them realize that they are still part of society, and can contribute to the economy in spite of their disabilities.

Shoulder Rehabilitation Alleviates Shoulder Injury Problems

E-mail Print PDF

Shoulder injuries are common to athletes. Though they’re doing the best they can to have an injury-free career life, it seems like injuries are part of their life. With this, shoulder rehabilitation is what they’ll mostly need. And it’s not only limited to athletes, ordinary people may suffer from shoulder injury at some point in their life.

Shoulder rehabilitation, as with other types of rehabilitation, focuses on the restoration of the functions that were normal before the impairment. An exercise program, or therapy, prescribed to the patient signals the start of the rehabilitation stage. However, medical experts say that rehabilitation actually begins from the time the patient has been seen by a health care practitioner, and ends right after the patient’s release.

Two common shoulder injuries that need shoulder rehabilitation are Subacromial Syndromes and Shoulder Instability. The first type means a rotator cuff tear, which is characterized by frequent shoulder pains. The aim of shoulder rehabilitation for this particular injury is to bring back the muscular balance between the elevators and depressors. A person suffering from instability of the shoulder would need shoulder rehabilitation, as it will restore the muscular balance between internal and external rotators of the shoulder.

Reducing activity, compressing the injured shoulder, elevating the injured shoulder above heart level, and taking medication like anti-inflammatory drugs, are some of the things that comprise dislocated shoulder rehabilitation. Its objectives include strengthening the muscles, increasing flexibility, and establishing painless movement. Extreme injury cases however, would mean avoidance of activities that would cause shoulder pain.

There are shoulder rehabilitation exercises that have to be done on both sides of the body to maintain balance. Doing these exercises can increase the strength of both shoulders, and may prevent the occurrence of injury to either of the shoulders. Some of the shoulder rehabilitation exercises that you may be required to practice by your doctor are: shrugs, bicep curls, triceps curls, chest raises, saws, pendulum swings, shoulder rotation, shoulder flexion, towel stretch, and flexed elbow pull.

Aside from these, your doctor may prescribe other exercises instead of, or on top of the ones mentioned earlier, depending on the nature and intensity of the injury. There are also exercises that don’t necessarily require movement from the injured area, some of which are: stationary bicycle, walking, jogging, and swimming. These exercises can be done if the pain is tolerable.

Always remember to consult your doctor before doing any exercises or treatment for your shoulder injury. This is to ensure that shoulder rehabilitation will be properly addressed. Your doctor is the one who knows best what kind of shoulder rehabilitation you need to undertake, depending on the degree of severity of your shoulder injury.

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Helps Individuals Achieve a Quality of Life

Physiatry is derived from two Greek words namely: physikos which means physical, and iatreia which means the art of healing.  Rehabilitate, on the other hand, is taken from the Latin word “habilitas”, meaning “to make able. With this concept, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is put up to facilitate healing of those people faced with traumas in life.

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), or Physiatry, is a medical specialty that focuses on the restoration of a person’s normal functioning, which has been affected by a disease, disorder, or injury. These people need help in order for them to do the things they usually did before the disability.

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation does not merely focus on helping a person reduce his disability, but it aims for the recovery of the whole person. This means that his emotional, medical, and social need are given due emphasis as well.

It is necessary to know that Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation does not undo the impairment of a person, nor does it guarantee to fully restore one’s normal functions. It is, however, working towards helping a person reach the highest level of function by lessening his disability, preventing any complications, and teaching him self-reliance and independence.

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is strongly suggested in certain circumstances, like impairment and activity limitation. Impairment is basically losing the normal functions of a part, or some part, of the body due to injury or disease, such as paralysis to one side of the body due to a stroke. Activity limitation is the result of an impairment. A person not being able to walk properly as a result of paralysis is an example of an activity limitation. In both cases, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation would enable the person to live his life as close as possible to how it was lived before the impairment.

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation prepares tailored treatment schemes for each individual, focusing on the degree of disability, the patient’s overall health status, and their possible response to the treatments. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation does not leave a person to do the treatment plan himself. It closely monitors his progress and ensures that a quality life is within reach.

In fact, there are many success stories of individuals who were helped by Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Some of these persons with disabilities have continued to live productive lives despite the disability they went through. Some have gone to school, some found jobs, and others maintain the same social duties in the society. These are not results of medical surgery, but of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
